The article Roopkund Lake: The Mystery of Skeletons is going to tell you about the secrets behind the skeletons found in the Himalayas of India. Roopkund Lake is one such Himalayan lake that hosts mysteries of various skeletons found there, discovered by a patrolling British forest ranger in 1942.
Roopkund Lake is a glacial lake found at the high altitudes of the Himalayas in the Uttarakhand state of India. Roopkund Lake is said to be a mystery lake or skeleton lake in the local language. The area around the lake is uninhabited and is approximately at an altitude of 16,470 feet (5,020 m) above sea level, surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains.
According to the season and weather, the lake expands and shrinks. Most of the time it remains in frozen condition. When the snow melts skeletons become visible.
Findings of Roopkund Lake
There are a lot of questions regarding this lake such as-
Who were these people?
When did they die?
How did they die?
Where did they come from?
Scientists and Anthropologists have been trying to solve the mystery behind skeletons found in the lake for a very long time. Indian and international scientists reported that the remains found not only belong to India but also from other regions.
Various theories are given concerning the remains of skeletons found in the Roopkund lake. According to the study released in Nature Communications journal, these several hundred of people did not die due to a single catastrophic event as earlier reported, but due to multiple incidents.
The Anthropological Survey of India conducted a study about the skeletons during the 1950s and some samples are displayed at the Anthropological Survey of India Museum, Dehradun.
Most recently, genetic analysis and radiocarbon dating are done by scientists which reveal that the skeletons are found to belong to a different distinct group of people.
It is still not clear about the events that happened at Roopkund Lake. No arms or weapons are found there. Genetic analysis shows no evidence of a mass epidemic.
The Roopkund Trek Ban
Roopkund is one of the most famous treks in India. It has mesmerizing views and is a perfect destination spot for tourists. The Roopkund trail now has been banned due to the damage done to the surrounding biodiversity.
This ban impacted the lives of village people surrounding the trail of the trek as it is their source of income. But the government banned it because of its harmful impacts on biodiversity which is also an important concern.
